Missing retirement community resident found after night in NJ woods

PEQUANNOCK, NJ — Following an overnight search in a heavily wooded area, rescue teams this morning found a 68-year-old resident of a retirement community who was reported missing Wednesday night.

He was taken to Chilton for a medical examination, said Capt. Jeffrey Paul, spokesman for Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi.

The man, whose identity was not released, was found shortly after 8 a.m. today, Paul said.

Around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Pequannock police responded to Cedar Crest Village in the Pompton Plains section of the township on a report of the missing resident.

Pequannock police notified the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Missing Persons Unit who responded to the scene along with the Morris County Search and Rescue Team, which is comprised of members of the Morris County Park Police, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.

The missing man walked with a cane and had last been seen by neighbors during dinner Tuesday. However, the Wednesday newspaper remained on the floor outside of the resident’s door and he didn’t show up to religious services within the community on Wednesday that he usually attends.

An exhaustive search of the heavily wooded area and steep grounds surrounding the area was coordinated which involved 21 buildings. He was found outside the fenced-in 130-acre campus.

The following agencies participated in the search operation: Pequannock Township Police Department, Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Missing Persons Unit, Morris County Park Police, Morris County Search and Rescue Team, Morris County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team, Firefighters from Pequannock, Lincoln Park, Kinnelon, Parsippany, Montville, Boonton, Pompton Lakes and the Totowa Fire Departments, Pequannock Township Rangers, Pequannock Township Office of Emergency Management, Morris County Department of Law and Public Safety, Morris County Communications Division, North East Mutual Aid Coordinators, NYPD Aviation and Cedar Crest Security.
