Rescue groups merge
Timmins, Ontario CA:  For members of the new Timmins Porcupine Search and Rescue group, two heads are better than one.

Created through an amalgamation of Timmins Search and Rescue and Porcupine Area Search and Rescue Inc., the organization is anticipated to run more smoothly under one umbrella.

"Both groups were finding difficulty acquiring funding, so by creating one unit, it will simplify things," said public relations director Peter Delmonte.

"It'll create a more streamlined organization, and will utilize the brains from both units."

Delmonte added the two groups always performed searches together, so bringing the administration side together seemed like the "logical" thing to do.

The Timmins Porcupine Search and Rescue team has about 80 active members who perform searches under the direction of the Timmins Police Service or the Ontario Provincial Police.

"The police do the background work, then call us in when the manpower is necessary."

All volunteers are required to train through the Ontario Search and Rescue Volunteer Association.
